Supporting the Next Generation of Dog Walkers

The dog‑walking industry is growing fast, but the support and education available to new walkers haven’t kept pace. Every week, I meet people who adore dogs and want to build a career around them — yet they’re stepping into a role that is far more complex, skilled, and emotionally demanding than most realise. Dog walking isn’t simply “taking dogs out.” It’s risk management, behaviour assessment, welfare advocacy, communication, business strategy, and emotional resilience all woven together. And without guidance, new walkers often learn the hard way.
That’s why I wrote this ebook.

I wanted to create a resource that goes beyond the basics and speaks honestly about what professional dog walking really involves. Not to scare people off, but to empower them. Dogs deserve walkers who understand behaviour, who can read subtle communication signals, who know how to prevent incidents rather than react to them, and who can make welfare‑first decisions even under pressure. Walkers deserve the same — clear boundaries, sustainable pricing, safe systems, and the confidence that comes from evidence‑based knowledge rather than guesswork.
This ebook brings together everything I’ve learned from working with rescue dogs, supporting frontline staff, and helping owners navigate complex behaviour. It covers the parts of the job that often get overlooked: safely matching dogs, managing arousal, designing decompression‑focused walks, handling difficult conversations, setting boundaries, and building a business that doesn’t burn you out.
My goal was to create something practical, compassionate, and grounded in science — a guide that helps new walkers start strong and helps experienced walkers refine their practice.
Ultimately, I wrote this because dog walking matters. It shapes a dog’s emotional well-being, behaviour, safety, and daily quality of life. When walkers are skilled, supported, and confident, dogs thrive — and so do the humans who care for them.
If this ebook helps even one walker feel more prepared, more informed, and more empowered to put welfare first, then it’s done exactly what I hoped it would.
