When we think about raising a happy, polite dog, our focus is often on training and physical exercise. These can be important, but there’s another, often overlooked ingredient that has a profound impact on a dog’s well-being: resilience.

A resilient dog is one who can adapt to new situations, recover from stress, and maintain emotional balance through life’s inevitable ups and downs. Much like in people, resilience in dogs is a key predictor of long-term health and quality of life.

Here’s how resilience helps in real life:

·       Fewer problem behaviours like excessive barking, reactivity, lunging, destruction, or house-soiling

·       Greater emotional self-regulation, leading to calm responses in stressful moments

·       Increased confidence in unfamiliar environments (like parks, vet clinics, or when meeting new people)

·       A more positive association with training sessions and learning new cues

·       A resilient dog isn’t “perfect”—but they’re far less likely to develop persistent behaviour problems that stem from anxiety or fear.

All dogs need resilience to adapt to the many challenges they may face throughout life, including changes in environment, training, social interactions, or even just living in a human centric world. Resilience helps them manage stress, recover from setbacks, and maintain emotional stability. It is essential for their overall well-being, making them more confident, adaptable, and better companions.
